This line of work probemetizes the separation between institutional (with a focus on norms and culture) and political economic (with a focus on material inequalities) perspectives on development. So far, I’ve focused on environmental indicators of development. However, I expect these arguments to extend beyond the natural environment. Whether they do or not is, of course, and empirical question.
Rather than treating these phenomenon as distinct or competing, I argue that insights from both perspectives, together, can give us a more complete explanation for cross-national development outcomes.
